Are You ‘Board’ Yet?

Last Saturday I was lucky enough to SCORE this old, antique ironing board…I know what you’re thinking…euwwww…

But it’s super heavy and really sturdy..no wobbles in this guy!  And it was only $2!

My hubby filled in the holes with wood filler and sanded it for me…and then I put on three coats of varnish…and now I have a VERY sweet and unique computer table/work station!

I can wheel my chair right up and under to use my laptop…ahhh much better!

And in a matter of seconds, I have my appliqué station, freeing up my REAL ironing board!  Now I just need to find some time so that I can PLAY!

It’s off to the Cowichan Exhibition for me today…as an observer this time!  I had the honour to be a Judge this year!  On Thursday night, another retired school teacher and I judged all the Categories from 16 years old and Under!  It was great fun and took us three hours to do, as we agonized over the merits of each entry.  Such creativity and talent in our younger generation!

After Judging First, Second and Third in each category, they gave us each 8-10 rosette ribbons to put on the entries that we each thought were extraordinary.  NOW that was fun because we each had our favourites!  And ALL entries received ribbons…we sure didn’t want to crush any little hearts!  Yes, I would do this again in a heartbeat!

One thing that I did notice as a Judge…if the child wrote a little something about their entry..ie why they made it, collected it, how they made it, what the scene depicted …etc..it got our attention!  Good to know if your child/grandchild ever enters a Country Fair!

Have a Super Saturday and Happy Quilting!~P

  1. Very cool idea, and well done! Now all you need to find is a nice wicker antique fishing creel to put on the end there. Very creative and useful ideas you have.

  2. Wow! Great score on the ironing board. It looks just perfect in your sewing room! And being a judge for that age group sounds like sooo much fun! It's just wonderful that the kids have already begun quilting at that age - by the time they "get up there" they could be master quilters!

  3. You two are just too creative. Glad to hear you had fun judging the younger one's quilts. It's good to see the art will not be lost.

  7. This is genius, P. Talk about recycling.
    Sounds like a fun day judging all those quilts. It's good to see that the younger generation is still interested in learning about quilting, and it's not becoming a lost art like so many other traditional crafts.

  21. a friend just picked up one these for me recently, it was being thrown away when the people moved. I need to fix one of the rivets, but would like to use it in my entry way as an entry table. I was going to recover with a pretty fabric but like your idea of leaving it wood.

  22. You will love it. I got one about 20 yrs ago at a yard sale. It's all wood-even the legs. It is awesome. I had to remove a ton of staples and make a new pad and cover for it (and have made another since then) but it is so sturdy. I bought a 'regular' ironing board a few years ago because I thought I'd rather have one that is lighter and easier to fold up. I tried it one time and it wobbled so much. I haven't touched it since and have just decided to keep my wooden one out all the time.

  27. just found your blog, while blog-hopping... I Love your 'new' ironing board! What a steal, too, only $2! Amazing what a little sanding and polyurethane will do!
    Can't wait to read more of your blog, and get to know you! {Sweet Pea was a nickname I used for my oldest daughter.}

  28. I love old ironing boards! I have two of them. One I have been using for a long time - bought it at a garage sale. The wood ironing boards are so much sturdier than the newer ones! I have a second one that I thought I might sell, but I guess most people don't want one. I love what you did with yours, however, I don't really have any place that I can fit mine. I paid $10 for it at a garage sale also.
