Look at what my friend, Jean has draped over her couch in her living room. It is an antique quilt make by her husband’s Great Grandmother- made around 1860.
It was passed down to Grandma, then to her husband’s mother and finally to her husband. This quilt is museum worthy. It is hand made from different colours of scrap velvets and is so beautiful it took my breath away. There is a braided edging of flat coin shaped pompoms sewn around the entire quilt and on the back (yes I snuck a peek…) are little old fashion copper rings (must have been a wall hanging at one time).
Make sure that you click on the picture to enlarge it~
I wish you could see it in “real life”! These pictures DO NOT do it justice…the colours are deeper and richer, lots of warm browns, and soft beiges, reds, purples and greens…the camera seemed to pick up the oranges but I don’t remember seeing orange..I think those are the reds….but you get the idea.
It is so soft, lush and exquisite with just a little of the nap worn off some of the velvet. Just lovely!
Makes me want to get out that Rubbermaid of velvet that I have been collecting…Do you think in a 100 or more years our ancestors will have our quilts tossed over their couches…Never thought of it before but I guess it’s possible…A good reminder for us to LABEL all quilts…just in case…you just never know who’s going to have it on the back of their couch…or when!
Have a super special Saturday and Happy Quilting!
Thank you for sharing your friends treasure. It's stunning!

ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful treasure she has. I think of all the velvets I threw away years ago, would have been nice to have now.
