Christmas QAL and Buttons Beware!

First off…Circle this Saturday on your calendar, as it’s time for Quilt Sue’s Christmas Quilt-A-Long!  This month our lovely hostess is Lesley, from Cuddle Quilter Blog…and she is promising that we will PARTY HARTY!!

Quilt Sue let the cat out of the bag…and told us that Lesley will also be having a GIVE AWAY…so Lesley, be prepared for a stampede of wild Quilters!  Lesley will also have the next installment to the mystery quilt, “Festive Mystery”, waiting for us.  Be there or be square!

Since we are on the subject of Christmas…do you remember this little quilt?…It’s my all time favourite Christmas Quilt of ALL TIME!!

P1100660

Love it!!  I took it down south with us to hang in the 5th Wheel over Christmas..to bring a little Christmas Cheer to our little home on wheels.  Anyways when I was taking it out of the plastic bag I noticed THIS!!

BUTTON STAINS!!  YIKES!!  Now I don’t remember what kind of buttons I used…new or old?  I have a feeling that they were new…

P1180022

Can you see the purple dye marks under each buttons… ?  Yup…those button marks are under EVERY single button!!

P1180023

And not only are there marks under the button but they also left marks where the buttons touched the other snowmen while the quilt was being stored!!

P1180024

Can you see the stains…under the carrot nose and over to the left?

P1180025

So I cut off all the buttons…and will sew on new buttons!  Or maybe old buttons that have stood the test of time!?

Has anyone had this problem before?  I keep all my Christmas quilts together in a large pillow bag that zips up and store it in a linen cupboard…where it’s nice and warm and dry.  This quilt has never been wet…aside from a photo shoot in the snow!

Before I use buttons on a quilt again, I think I will soak them first and see if they ‘bleed’!!

As Quilt Sue would say… ‘Darn bleeding buttons!  Stiff upper lip and all that!!”  QS always has such a way with words!!

Tally ho!
Have a thrilling Thursday and Happy Quilting!~P

  1. I'm so sorry your beautiful quilt was damaged. I suppose you've experimented to see if any of the rogue dye will wash out. I'd never have thought to test a button to see if it would 'bleed', but I will in the future.

  3. I have never heard of buttons staining a project. A new one to me. That snowman quilt is the one from my blog that has been pinned the most on Pinterest. And I have had lots of requests for pattern info though I listed it more than once on my blog. Guess if you are looking at Pinterest, you don't find that info.

  4. I don't recall having my buttons bleed, but I haven't put them on pieces I wash or use dark ones that are old, so maybe that is why.

  5. Depending on where the buttons bled, you could place fabric or another button on the O to look like a mouth.

  6. I had that button problem once a few years ago, with some red buttons. I never did get the stain out. Sorry you had a problem, love the quilt.

  8. WOW I have never seen this problem! I am curious to see how your soaking the button experiment goes...maybe the snowmen were crying cause they were folded away!

  9. Paulette,
So the comment begs the question who made the buttons? Do you recall the manufacturer's name?

I'd almost suggest putting them on a similar fabric to recreate the stain and then try using the shout dye catcher or grandma's stain remover to see if they would remove the stains.

Your quilt is lovely I like the idea of embroidering a O mouth below the nose for that one snowman.

  11. Who would think that buttons would bleed? Now we have one more thing to watch out for....errr! Maybe we should just use more wool for the eyes and mouths.

  12. I just sewed a bunch of buttons on a quilt, how can I make sure they don't bleed? Where could I get a copy of that pattern? I love it!

  15. That is MY favorite quilt too Paulette! Hope you can make your snowmen white again. No I've not had any issues with buttons and I use all out of the button jar.

  16. I love your quilt! Do you know where the pattern is available or would you be willing to sell yours?
That is awful about the buttons. Are they made or wood? I wonder if Color Catchers would take it out?

  20. That's simply disgusting! To go to all that work and have it marred by such a simple thing as buttons. I'm hopeful you can get the stains out easily.

  21. I wonder if it was not the thread used to sew on the buttons.....and maybe the button helped to hold some moisture around the thread that caused it to bleed.

  22. So sorry to hear about this button dilemma. Were a few choice words said? Hope your little snowmen will soon be sporting new buttons.
