…It’s not ALL Work…

About the only thing that hasn’t been packed up yet is my sewing machine so when the urge to sew hits I have been practicing my free motion quilting.

You KNOW I am hard up with things to show when I actually take pictures of my free motion quilting!!  BUT I have I noticed some important things while practicing……I am becoming more relaxed.  My shoulders aren’t going up around my ears and I’m not nearly as tense…

I love doing clam shells…did you hear THAT?…I LOVE doing clam shells…I ENJOY doing clam shells and I’m getting better…not perfect by any means but better…P1150971 I love making loops and three leaf daisies… P1150973

I NEVER thought I’d ever link the words ENJOY and FREE MOTION together…but…

P1150974

I still find stippling difficult…I think it’s because I can’t visualize it…

P1150975  I can visualize flowers so they come fast and easy…I love making flowers… P1150981 …and leaves… P1150983  I actually said when I was finished… “Now that was fun!” (and YES I said it out loud!)…which was a first- the saying it was FUN not the saying it out loud (don’t ALL quilters talk to themselves out loud?  Ouch…the things to come out of my sewing room!!)

Practice really is key…so someday…yes, someday I am GOING to Free Motion Quilt a quilt!!  Today however I will work on the stippling…and more of the FUN stuff!

In the evenings I have been working on these little guys…

  1. Paulette your machine quilting is looking great! I laughed when I read that your shoulders aren't up around your ears. I remember doing the same thing. Don't forget to visualize the Mickey Mouse ears when you are stippling.

  3. Are you doing this on your regular sewing machine, nothing special? My thoat opening isn't very large, so think I would have to quilt something small. It's amazing, you're doing a very nice job.

  4. Wow, your machine quilting is looking fabulous. I had a hard time visualizing meandering/stippling, too. Then I start visualizing puzzle pieces and there it was.

A woman after my own heart - baskets, snowmen and gingerbread. Sigh! :-)

  7. I know the feeling- shoulders up to your ears- haha! And if I'm having a bad day- I don't even attempt the stippling. I just wait when it's a good day and it goes so much smoother. So true that you get better with practice. I'm fairly new to quilting and this part is getting easier for me. Yours look wonderful and as always love your stitchery!! Have a great day!! :)

  12. Your quilting is amazing! I'm a hand quilter and I just am so impressed. I tried to stipple a few years ago on a small project and threw it out...so kudos to you...looks like you have been doing this for years, but I guess you're fairly new to it...well, i can tell you that you have mastered it! Impressive!

  15. you know paulette we all do what we can, i can't even contemplate following a free motion pattern but i can wing it all day long, so kudos to your machine quilting....keep on talking it up in the sewing room or wherever, i do this ALL the time & when singing then i've really got the creative energy flowing, definitely clear out the room of anyone within ear shot (horrible voice) but it's only for me anyway!
enjoy your every creative venture, cheri

  16. I think your FMQ is looking very good and that a quilt should be done very soon!
    Love the little stitcheries, too.

  17. Great job on the FMQ! I love the clam shells....I need to try that. Mine don't seem to be quite as free flowing. I know....practice , practice , practice!
I think you are totally ready for trying out your skills on a quilt....I just think of it as one big practice sandwich!

  18. Snowmen, gingerbread, holly? Anyone'd think Christmas is coming.

Your FMQ-ing is brilliant. Brilliance and fun too - it doesn't get much better does it?

  19. Your machine quilting makes me think it might be possible to learn it, some day, if I just would start practicing!
    The stitcheries are so sweet!

  20. hummmm, and all this time I thought the proper positioning for machine quilting was to have your shoulders touching the lower lobes of your ears???...

  21. Wow/...you have done great with your freehand.......I am impressed......stippling will come...practice on paper. I think you should be able to download just a picture of stipple and then take a pen and go over and over it...this from the girl who can kinda stipple but nothing else ;)
