Will The Cold W-i-n-d-s Blow…?

Wednesday is the day I REALLY look forward to here at The Sands!  It’s Quilting in the Clubhouse!  More and more quilters are arriving.  I bumped into Anne from Edmonton but still haven’t seen Pauline from St. Paul, Alberta.  As you have guessed, about 60% of the park guests are Canadian…trying to get away from the wet and cold, snow and freezing temperatures.  I would have to say that we have done a VERY good job as the weather has been gorgeous and HOT (94F).

BUT enough about the weather~ let’s get back to Quilting!!  My dilemma every Wednesday is what to take to work on?  Last week I got the binding on the Peter/Paul quilt and sewed a lot of the Dresden Plates onto the background fabric.

I machine stitched around each Dresden as close to the edge as I could get…

Yesterday after writing about how wonderful Penny’s applique skills are, in particular~ her needle turn technique…a light bulb went off!  Why not learn from the master?! I have read tons of articles and books on needle turn applique but have never tried it….NOW is the time!!  So I grabbed the books I brought and went through them looking for a pattern.  It didn’t take long to find this beauty!P1110390

I love this basket quilt…a nice simple design…and I do love baskets!

And I have all this gorgeous Civil War fabric..the shirting for the background and all these lovely coloured prints for the baskets…

P1110393

In my mind it is going to be a huge quilt but in reality it may end up being a runner….but it’s the process that I am after…and I’m hoping Penny is up for the challenge!

Oh…I found the pattern in this book… “When the Cold Wind Blows”…YIKES!!  I sure hope this book doesn’t jinx our beautiful weather.  If you have ever lived out on the desert then you know about the…W-I-N-D…we don’t even like to use the word around here…shhhhh….

Have a wonderful Wednesday and Happy Quilting!~P

  1. I have always wanted that book but never got around to buying it.

When I lived up in Phila., all the Canadians that came south to the Jersey shore were called snowbirds. Same with the ones that come south in the winter to Myrtle Beach and Hilton Head (SC). Are you called that on the west coast?

  7. I too love the Dresden plates! That black background makes those colors pop! Needle turn appliqué is not hard at all. I aight myself from a book. It's a bit time consuming but totally worth the effort!

  9. I have "When the Cold Wind Blows", and the basket quilt is on my "want to do" list too. I enjoy applique a lot, so after I get some unfinished projects completed, it will likely be the next large quilt I begin. Will love watching how yours comes together!

  10. I love your Dresden's! They are so sweet and especially cute on the black background. I have that Coldwinds book, which I love... I was looking at the baskets just a couple nights ago and wondering if I was up for something so intense:) I even thought about enlarging the pattern to make it a little easier. (that's when I knew I might not be up for the challenge)hehe
I will be anxious to see your progress!

  11. How eerie that you posted this... I was at a retreat this past weekend and there was a lady there that was putting that quilt together. It was GORGEOUS!
I got home so inspired by all the applique that was popping up that I started looking at books and was surprised to find that quilt in my newest book. I bought When the Cold Wind blows for the incredible holly quilt in it but quickly realized that it had several other quilts with great potential. The floral quilt in the front is being made as a BOM at a local quilt shop here in TX. So many wonderful possibilities. Can't wait to see your progress.

  15. Love those baskets Paulette and your fabrics look fabulous!

Did you check out my stamp basket blocks over on my blog? Just putting it all together now and getting ready to hand quilt. This is my first completely hand-pieced project and I loved doing it!

I have taken a couple of classes in needle turn applique down at "Road to California". The best method for me is back basting that I learned from Jo Morton last year...I can finally applique! And I really love it ....which is a HUGE surprise! Never in a zillion years did I ever think I would even do applique and now look at me...who would have thought??

    Hugs,

  23. Hi Paulette
I have been working a little on my dresdan wedges that you cut out before you left to go and get a tan.Ha ha can you do that and quilt. I have tried to get twenty wedges to make a circle and they do not lay flat, so now after I counted yours, I am putting 22 wedges together. got two plates ready to go on to some background. I will have to take a picture and send it to you. take care
    Hugs Kathleen
