To Wash…or NOT to Wash…

How often do YOU wash your jeans?  This was a question that they asked on the NEWS last night…  Seems like a simple enough question….I wear my jeans a couple of times..until the knees bag or I get a stain.  Then I turn them inside out and fire them into the dirty laundry.  What about you?

Well, according to Jean manufactures, if we want our jeans to stay in pristine condition we shouldn’t wash our jeans as often as we do..in fact we should only be washing them every SIX MONTHS!!  We should spot wash any stains and put them in the freezer to kill any bacteria! (yuck)  There was no mention of baggy knees…or any mention of smell…YUCK!!

I don’t know about you but I’m liking my rag-tag, faded, CLEAN jeans better and better all the time!!

Yup…it’s a slow quilting day…:o)

Have a FUN Friday and Happy Quilting!~P

  1. I guess if you pay a few hundred dollars for a pair of jeans you might want them to last a very long time. 6 months before washing? Gross!

  2. I thought the opposite, that is interesting but gross, lol. My husband wears his thin and I wash them thinking the dirt is what wore them out, hmmm.

  3. Ewwww....6 months!! And kill germs in the freezer! Yikes! I don't think so.
I do wear my jeans a few times between washings, but dont think I could live with that!

  4. HAHAHA - we saw that on BCTV news last night and were as horrified as the news team! I would think after six months jeans would be able to stand up on their own without any human in them!

  5. Seriously gross - into the freezer - ICK!!!!

I wash mine like you - those baggy knees drive me crazy. LOL

  6. My son told me this not long ago....I need to ask him if he has washed his jeans yet : )...I am a fan of faded, clean jeans that don't have baggy knees too! LOL

  7. Hmmm....I wash my jeans after 2 or 3 wearings, and they generally last me 2-3 years. I think that's pretty good.

  8. Every six months! That just sound disgusting. I'll just keep buying my less expensive jeans and washing them as often as I want!

  9. That's crazy! I'm like you. Sometimes I just throw them on to go to the store. Or I'll only wear them half a day. So I only wash them if they get dirty or like you said, they start to sag. But 6 months! Eeewww!

  10. I listened to a documentary about the same thing where a young guy went a year without washing them. Yes, he spot cleaned them, etc but when the year was up those same jeans almost stood up on their own too. That is why you have a dark wash detergent and a cold water cycle.

  11. Ooooo.....how gross is that. Thats like this lady tried to convince me one time not to wash my hair but every 3 months. It was better for my hair, but not better for my social life.....LOL

  12. After 6 months, you shouldn't have to worry about baggy knees - the jeans will stand up on their own. Yuk.

  13. Who thinks this stuff up? I would think that after 6 months the jeans would take off on their own for nearest laundromat. A couple of wears and I wash mine. I buy the cheap kind so if they wear out faster I can afford to replace them.

  14. 6 months! I about died with that answer! I've heard about the freezer thing before, but 6 months! Forget. I"ll keep washing mine!

  15. Poor me. I wear them once and wash, sometimes twice. I think jeans stink afer wearing them a number of times. Just smell plain dirty. I LIKE the smell of Snuggle!

  16. I bet some bloke thought this insane idea up...a man that NEVER had to clean out a freezer! Or worried about the germ association with five pair of Levi's and the frozen chicken for his dinner!

This does beg the question though, how often do you wash your quilts? I confess that my big big bed quilt often gets washed about twice a year. But we dont have pets, just a messy 3yr and 5 old!
And while I happily throw my wool batting quilts in the machine (on wool wash), I hesitate about the cotton batting ones...because I havent been using it very long. And what the heck do you do when you use bamboo! Sorry Paulette, this is way to much information for a comment! Happy quilting, Sue SA
PS please note batting comes off a roll in Australia, so no packing with washing instructions.

  17. I mentioned to my Niece recently that I LOVED her NEW jeans and her reply?

"I've had these for a couple of years now" so I said..

"how do you keep them so NEW?" AND SHE SAID...

I DRY-CLEAN THEM! Yep! about every two weeks, off they go to the drycleaners!

I wash my jeans when the waistband begins to hang around my knees! :-))))) what is it with jeans? and why can't they sew in a non-stretch trim so the waist actually STAYS there!!??!

  18. I wash wash wash em. The more they get washed the softer and more comfy they get. Oh yeah, and they fade great too. I also do NOT turn them inside out. Gotta love the worn in jeans.

  19. Yuk...they go to be kidding!
I too hate the baggy knees.

  20. Same as you. Unless they get dirty or baggy I try to wear them a second time before I wash them. That's it! I will keep my routine the same thank you very much.

  21. I read somewhere not too long ago that we Americans wash everything way too much - including our bodies. It had something to do with losing our immunity to germs I think. :) Jeans are a little different from other clothing items I suppose. How often I wash them depends on a lot of things. This week I wore a pair of jeans several times. I also wore long underwear beneath them so my skin never touched the jeans. :) The long underwear was a whole different kettle of fish - they have to be washed way more often! blessings, marlene

  22. Oh yuck! We often see tradesmen who have obviously worn those jeans for months...always think if they wear such dirty jeans, their work may be shoddy too! I don't turn them iside out, I wash and finger press a seam. I also like the stretch ones that give me the ability to eat more! Just a couple of wears and into the wash they go.

  23. Oh my heck! What a revolting idea! Gives me the heebie jeebies just thinking about it!

After 6 months I am pretty sure the jeans can not only stand on their own, they would starting to develop language skills and plot the takeover of the free world!

  24. All I can say is AMEN to the rest of the comments. Who would go 6 months between washings???

  25. Ha...all that would do is make you never wear your jeans cuz they would be frozen and way too cold to put on :)
