Sue Daley an Australian designer and english paper piecing queen has an interesting tutorial on her blog right now for stitching apple cores pieces together. I am currently using her method of using a glue stick for basting instead of thread basting and I don't think I will go back.

I know…I know…the last thing that I need is to start ANOTHER new project…but…these little guys were calling my name….
“Buy me!! Buy ME!!…Try me out…”
Sew I did…I mean what's a quilter to do?…AND I remembered how much fun the paper pieced Hexagon Quilt was…(oh yeah it’s still a UFO!!) BUT these are SO cute…tiny…only two inches! I’ll use the scraps from the tumbler quilt…it’s a no brainer…right?
I threw a towel on my ironing board as I knew that I would be using the spray starch…won’t make THAT mistake again!!
First I traced the shape of the paper apple core onto the back of the fabric, then cut out the shape leaving 1/4 inch to turn…(the ink on the paper template is from testing the pen.. to get the ink going)
I needed a harder surface so I used a plastic lid..
with a little piece of sandpaper underneath. This grips the fabric so it won’t shift when I write on it.
I got just a little carried away cutting out shapes…pretty aren’t they?
I put my little pretties into a plastic berry container…perfect size and we ARE eco-friendly!!
OK…let’s try to make one… I placed the paper template on the wrong side of the fabric and turned the rounded part of the core over and stitch to hold…
..then I did a running stitch around the curve of the core and pulled tight…that was easy…a couple of stitches to secure and moving right along.
Clip the inside curves in three places (you can’t see it but they are there…)
Stitch down the sides and repeat the other two sides…YIKES they multiply like crazy!! Give them a spritz of spray starch…
LOOK!! I have enough for a coaster..well an almost coaster! :o)
I threw the penny in so that you can see how small these cores are!
That’s enough for one night….
I’m not sure what I will do with these little cores…but they ARE dang cute!! and fun to make…addictive if you know what I mean…
AND I do have a nice portable hand project to take with me…where ever I may wander…
So next time you are in a quilt shop and something calls your name…you know exactly what to do…RUN like H-E..double hockey sticks!! :o)
Have a Super Saturday and Happy Quilting!~P
Just a reminder…if you haven’t entered Claire’s WOOL GIVE AWAY then GO HERE!
I love you! You make me feel so good about all those crazy UFO's lying around here...miniature apple cores though...oh girlfriend!
ReplyDeleteI bought the core die and they are too big for hand quilting and it took me three tries just to sew two together by machine, lol. Not as easy as it looked. I really wanted to make a runner with them, so when I am up to it, I will try again.

Those are so adorable. How will you connect them?
ReplyDeleteVery cute cores and lovely fabric. I'm also wondering how they get sewn together.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to enjoy watching this come together, but I will not be drawn in! I also don't need another project!
ReplyDeleteThose cores are TINY! Another project is never a bad thing if it makes you happy!
ReplyDeleteWhat would tomorrow be if we didn't have a long list of UFO's today?!
