Secrets For Those 55 and Older…

I have been retired for almost three years…I thought I wouldn’t like it…after all by August I was antsy to get back to work… I thought I would be bored.  I thought I wouldn’t have enough money.  I thought I would probably kill my husband.  I thought it would make me OLD!

Well none of those things came true…I LOVE being retired.  I am NEVER bored and I NEVER have ‘time’ on my hands…in fact the opposite is true.  There simply is not enough time in the day.  I get up at 6 every morning and I give’er all day…I would stay up past 11 at night if I weren’t so tired!!

Money..?  Well we could ALWAYS use more money but how much is enough?  I say as long as I can buy a pattern or some fabric I am a happy ‘camper’.  I no longer need a working wardrobe or stuff for my classroom or home.  My daughters were shocked to hear that I didn’t go Mall shopping once while I was traveling this winter-with the exception of my new shoes I didn’t buy anything…now fabric and patterns is another story…:o)

What kill my husband?  Nah…I just lock myself in my sewing room!!  ;o)

Yes, I am retired…my house isn’t spotless, my garden has weeds, my windows need cleaning and my car needs a good vacuuming…but I know that I will get around to it SOMEDAY.  After all…I NEED to ride my bike, dye some more wool, surf blogs, take the dogs for a walk, finish that Schnibble quilt, surf blogs and practice my free motion sewing!

As for getting OLD….I figure I will get just as old washing windows as I will stitching a wool penny rug!!  At least I will be OLD and HAPPY!!   So if you are thinking of retiring…go ahead and DO IT!!  It’s a well guarded secret that it is wonderful… so WHO KNEW??

Have a thrilling Thursday and Happy Quilting!!

  1. My husband and I have been retired for 10 years. We've never been so busy. We have to check with each other at the beginning of each week just to keep track of each other. I have my quilt pattern business and retreat business and my husband is my accountant and plays golf and poker. Not to mention how active we are with our grandchildren. Life is good. Continue to enjoy. Robin http://www.robinquiltsetc.com

  2. It's all in the attitude Sweet P!
I'm blessed to already be 'retired' (work harder, busier and happier than I've ever been) and DH is peddling as fast as he can to Freedom 55. Keep on quilting!

  8. I'm retired for less then a year now and YES it is wonderful. And why is so important to have clean windows when I can make a new bag or some hexies instead. Or just sit on my porch and have a nice cup of coffee...
    Keep sewing and smiling,
    Simona

  11. I like your attitude because it fits in with mine! I am not retired but I do steal time (not borrow because I don't intend to give it back) from chores to play in my sewing room. The rest doesn't go away and no-one else in this house cares because they don't do it either. Everyone is warm, fed and clothed.

  13. I hear you Paulette...That's how I feel..how did we have time to go to work....we have so much going on now, everyday is like a holiday!

The housework will still be there tomorrow, lifes too short to be cleaning all the time !

  14. You know, keeping busy keeps your mind young, if didn't do things that would be a good way to get old and feel old pretty fast. Yeah, who cares if the house isn't picked up or the windows washed it will get done eventually. I'm glad you are enjoying your retirement.

  16. I loved your post today. When I moved to Amerika Samoa and stayed home all day, not working, everyone would ask what I did all day....I would tell them that I had enough to keep me busy...they didn't understand...I love it....I can play in my sewing room or just lounge if I want..and yes, I can grow old cleaning house or sewing in my room...which would I prefer???

  18. Love your comment about getting as old washing windows as you will be stitching a wool penny rug. That's my philosophy! Figure I deserve to do things that bring me joy. And as far as time...think I'm busier now than ever or is it that I'm slowing down. Never! Enjoy this special time in your life...You've earned it! Nola

  19. Hear, Hear!

My husband and I took early retirement 10 years ago and in fact this is the year when we should officially be retiring. I reckon it was one of the best things we ever did, but, as you say, alot of it depends on your state of mind. One of the best things is being able to go places during the week and they're not busy, so please don't tell everyone our secret, or they'll all do it, and then everywhere will be crowded at times when they aren't at the moment.

  20. LOL! Paulette! I am nowhere near 55 but I think I may be retired and just didn't know it! You describe a typical day in my life, just throw in keeping afterschoolers, working a couple days at the quilt shop and longarm quilting for people!

  22. I'm so happy to read this. My mom is retiring age, and she acts so... old. There is so much joy to be had in life, and so much to do. So many things to try, so much to create. It's nice to hear someone grabbing life and running with it.
