Threads that Bind…

I always thought thread was thread…I’ve used Guterman thread early on because my quilting mentor said that it was great thread… It’s readily available, comes in a lot of great colours, never breaks or clumps.. so that’s what I use and to be honest…never really gave it much thought.  P1140006

Until we had a guest speaker at Heritage Quilting last Monday.  Cindy from ‘The Thread Candy Shoppe’ has an online thread shop and opens her store by appointment. What a THREAD SHOP selling ONLY thread?!

Who knew that there were so many different kinds of threads and different weights…there’s Brytes, Highlights, Halo, King Tut, Lava, Living Colours, Master Piece, Metallics, MonoPoly, NiteLite Extra Glow, Rainbows, Razzle Dazzles, Silk Kimono, Tire, Tiara, Soie Et Embroidery Floss, So Fine!, Treasure, Charlotte’s Fusible Web…and don’t forget the thread that dissolves with a spritz of water…Vanish Lite/ Vanish Extra!  Whew…and not a mention of Gutermann!

So many threads, so many colours, so many choices!!

Sew what did I buy..?  Well I would have LOVED to have bought one of each of the different kinds of threads, to try them out and compare…but had to settle for some Silk hand appliquéing thread…it’s guaranteed not to knot.   P1140018

Last time I hand appliquéd I used ordinary thread…which must have been Gutermann and it knotted all the time!  Very frustrating!  Cindy said that Kimono Silk Thread is perfect for hand appliqué as it rarely knots…I can’t wait to put it to the test!!

My next travel/camping project is going to be this quilt…it’s called Folk Art Bloom by Buggy Barn….

I have been slowly adding fabric to my stash to make this beauty…and just needed the thread!!P1140020

If you want to know more about the different threads that are available then check out Cindy’s Online shop!!  You are going to be amazed at all the choices!!

Have a wickedly wonderful Wednesday and Happy Quilting!~P

  1. You will love the Kimono silk thread. I've had a few KNOTS but NOT too many. (It's no wonder English is a hard language to learn.) The fabrics that you selected for Folk Art Bloom are wonderful. I look forward to watching your progress.

  4. Wow, you're going to applique that quilt in cottons? When I first saw the photo I assumed another wool project was in the works. It will be amazing! Here's to a knot-free applique experience.

  5. Love the fabrics you've chosen for your next project. It looks daunting to me but I will be looking forward, as always, to your progress. Especially interested to hear how you like the thread.

  6. That quilt pattern is in my 'gathering fabric pile' too! Now I know the perfect thread to use. I have a little trouble with knots when using silk thread, but more of a problem with the thread slipping out of the eye of the needle. Again, you have inspired me!

  7. I love to hand applique with silk thread. Many don't like it, but it is of course all personal preference. I have a selection of YLI brand and find it fabulous to work with... In fact (knock on wood, or my head... either is equally hard!), I don't think I have ever had any knotting with YLI. I'm interested to hear how you like the brand you chose. Off to check out the thread shop! My faves are Presencia for machine and hand work, Wonderfil for machine only, Guterman quilting for hand quilting only, and Presencia or YLI for hand applique. I do my binding with Presencia.

  8. I just love Superior Threads, they are simply the best. And what a variety they have, silks, King Tut, Bottomline and Masterpiece to name a few. I was at a quilt show in London and I spent $300 plus on Superior brand threads. Like I said, I just love it.
