Inspiration from the Oldies…

…old quilts that is!!  At Quilting on Monday, one of the quilters brought this book to share…”Unraveling the History of Quilts and Slavery”.

P1100597

In this book, Barbara Brackman tells the stories, history and myths regarding the quilts made by slaves during the time of slavery, emancipation, and the Underground Railroad.  Slaves of the deep South often preserved their memories with quilts, some actually telling stories…and these quilts have became part of their history.

This was one that caught my eye…’Birds in the Air’- representing the act of Freedom and emancipation.

Simple yet stunning!

If you look closely…it’s a simple nine patch in the middle…larger corner blocks and sashing…three petals (representing their wings of freedom) on the corners!  SEW simple but SEW effective!!

This is a book that I would love to read and add to my quilting library!   I would even like to make a quilt or two from it…!

  2. I watched the Dresden turkey video earlier today. Looks so easy to make. I have a Dresden template that will work for it. I hope to make one over the weekend. Are you going to make one?

  5. I love this topic and Barbara Brackman. I'm still working on my second slavery inspired quilt. It sounds so wrong to say that. I should say it is inspired by the stories told in The Book of Negroes

  6. The Birds in the Air block, to which Brackman refers, is also known as the Honey Bee. http://www.mccallsquilting.com/qb/mccallsquilting/pattern_205/index.html
To further confuse the issue, most people know of the Birds in the Air block as being made of triangles.
