A Dog with a Bone..

Don’t you love blogging?

Don’t you love quilting?

Put them together and whaddah get?

More ideas…more patterns…more inspiration than you know what to do with!!

For instance…this morning, as I sipped my coffee and read what everyone in Blogland was up to… I came across Lori’s Blog (The Humble Quilter)…she is busy getting ready for her Retreat.  Should she pack seven projects or is that too many?… “NO, Lori, take lots!” was my answer!  “You can NEVER have too many projects!!”  (I’m sure she heard me!) Then she proceeded to show us the seven projects that she was packing!!

SCREECH!!

My eyes glazed over when I saw her first project!

Just LOOK at these magnificent BASKETS…I love the wonkiness of them!  I love the shape…I love the colour…and they are made out of CIVIL WAR fabrics!  Doesn’t get any better than this!  Lori called them liberated baskets and she made them at a workshop from Gwen Marston!

Well I became a dog in search of her lost bone!!  I immediately Googled ‘liberated baskets’ by Gwen Marston and got this picture…it’s from Gwen’s Book “Liberating Quilt Making”.

BELLS AND WHISTLES went off in my head…!  Come on…you know what I’m talking about!  I CAN’T be the only one hearing these things!  I was positive that I saw this quilt in a magazine!  Now don’t ask me what I did yesterday or what I ate for dinner or who was where and with whom…but ask me about a quilt or a quilt shop that I love and I can probably tell you the answer…just sayin’…

Like any true blogger would do, I turned to Mrs. Google for help…and typed in ‘liberated baskets by Gwen Marston in a magazine’ and EUREKA she HAD the answer!!  Mrs. Google knows everything!!  Fons and Porter Sept/Oct 2005…and the magazine looked familiar!

I went to my magazine bookshelf and like a dog digging for her bone, magazine flew behind me!  YES!!  I found it!! (insert happy dance!)

Whew!!  Now this happened in a matter of minutes!  One minute I am sipping coffee and the next minute I am ripping apart the house…yup…dog possessed!  BUT I found THAT bone!!

What am I going to do with that ‘bone’?

Well I’m going to do what all dogs do with a bone… I’m going to gnaw on it for a while!

Hope you have a dog’s day afternoon…:o)))

  2. Yes, it certainly pays to keep ALL those magazines, and ALL that fabric. Never know when you might need a bone to gnaw.

  3. LOL - glad you found it! It is the seeking and knowing it is there and not being able to put my hands on it frustration that drives me CRAZY! (not a long drive, by the way)... Can you imagine trying to find these things pre-internet? (but then of course you wouldn't have seen the blog to put the idea in your head)

  4. Oh my gosh! That very magazine is sitting on my work counter. I never even noticed the baskets (til now) cause I was focused on that cute witch on the cover. Now I'll have to collect basket fabrics, too.

  5. You are so funny! But, what you say is true. I'm still looking for a Fons & Porter magazine with a certain pattern in it. I KNOW IT"S HERE SOMEWHERE.

  7. Thank you for the great laugh! I do the same thing so I could picture you exactly. I love the quilt but I don't have that magazine. Have fun!

  8. I have that magazine and have had that project on my list forever! I think you should start pulling fabrics for it now! I love those baskets. I'm thinking French General would be nice.

  9. Wow, you were lucky to find it that quickly. My mags are not that organised ... how many do you have? Of course it's never enough though.

  13. Well done Paulette,

I'm going to be doing a hoochy mama basket exchange a la Mary Lou Weidman. We are using tonga treats sugar batiks for the baskets and sketch delft blue by Timeless Treasures.

Have fun choosing fabrics for your baskets.

  14. Oh yes Ms. Sweet P I to have been a dog hunting down that bone lol - what a great way to put it. It's always so much fun when I find out I have it in my stash of patterns, books or magazines. Cute patterns by the way.

  21. What, seeing the most perfect quilt on the Internet, frantically Googling it for days, and finally finding and buying the ten year old magazine off eBay? I have NO idea what you're talking about. Oh wait, that quilt was posted on YOUR blog. ;)

  22. This is SO FUNNY! I just did the same thing with the Fig Tree & Co Cherry Pie pattern! I knew I had seen it somewhere. We quilters come from a long line of hunter/gatherers. Most people are one or the other but quilters are both! Have a happy 4th!

  24. Ha ha ha! I can SO RELATE to that "I know I have seen this someplace" and then have to find it! You described it perfectly! Fun baskets!

  25. Great way to describe your hunting for the basket pattern. Sometimes it's the thrill of the hunt! I love basket quilt squares. Can't wait to see your quilt in progress. Enjoy your day. Debby

  26. Well I'll be! I'm going to be at the same retreat as Lori, so I can't wait to see these. They are so great! Maybe I need a new project. BTW, I'm only taking 5 projects, but 2 are only cut up. It should be fun!

  27. I don't think everyone could come to the same conclusion, but I was confident you could Paula! I see baskets in your future.

  28. Oh my goodness. I have that magazine and recently pulled the basket pages out to go in my quilting bucket binder. Hope you make some baskets, great incentive to start some liberated blocks.

  29. What I like about this design is the border. Sort of lollipops. I want to make one!

  30. I had to laugh at the recognition because I can remember doing the same thing---see some project, gotta have it, won't rest till I do!

How great is it that you had the issue in your stash! Often that scenario has led me down the Ebay or Etsy path and when the dog needs that bone, she will pay (although sometimes you also luck up on a bargain too)! Have fun with your new project!

  31. That is too funny! Just yesterday I was tearing my room apart looking for two charm packs I know I have, but it wasn't until I was my way to the fabric store that I remembered where they were! Not to fear, I still managed to find some fun stuff to buy instead of having to replace them!

  32. I had the same magazine out too! I can't remember now what I was originally looking for in it but kept it out because of the punkin quilt that I thought I'd like to make. I'll have to check out the basket quilt too. There are a lot of fun projects in that issue.
