When the weather hits 30C I have a melt down…like in puddles! I can’t and won’t do much of anything…so yesterday when the thermometer went ABOVE 30C (that’s pushing 90F and above) I declared it a SEW DAY! I plugged in a fan, put the Olympics on TV and worked on hand quilting the Autumn Quilt…and then when my fingers needed a rest (ie Band-Aid time), I got out my mostly 1930s and 40s reproduction fabrics…and…
… I did the unthinkable!! I started something NEW!! I threw caution to the wind…and said enough of the UFOs! I need to have FUN!
SEW…I got out this book… “A Bouquet of Quilts”…
And flipped to this page…Oh yeah! Now we are talking!! LOOK at these baskets…are they not SCREAMING “FUN”! The pattern is called ‘Buds in a Basket’ by Japanese Designer, Sachiko Yamomoto. I have been drooling over this quilt for over a year now!
At first I thought the baskets were appliquéd but no…it involves sewing a curved basket to the opposite curved sides! YIKES! Breathe deep…I reminded myself that I am an experienced curve sewer…I have made a Peter/Paul quilt and a Winding Way Quilt…both having curved shapes…I can do this…oh yes, I can! Ok…Ok… both of these quilts were not GOLD medal winners but still…I really wasn’t expecting to get up on the podium!
So with the Olympics on in the background and the fan pointed right at me I started to sew…
I used freezer paper as a template to cut out the shapes…I remembered to mark those dots! I am showing great form…
And I remembered to put the D shape on the bottom and ease the C shape on the top by lifting the C shape with my left hand and guiding the D shape with my right! These are all important steps to get the desired outcome…
And the dots match…and the crowds ROAR!!
Before I could belt out ‘O Canada’ I had eight baskets made!!
And although they aren’t GOLD medal efforts…I do think they are worthy of at least a bronze …Ok…well how about copper? zinc?
Well one things for sure…this quilt is worthy of GOLD!
Have a Sunny (but not too hot) Sunday…and Happy Gold Medal Quilting!~P
You may think Bronze but those of us who don't sew curves are shouting Gold, Gold, Gold. You do know that there are a lot of appliqued flowers in those baskets. Good thing you like doing applique. It is a darling quilt. The borders really add to its beauty too. Have fun completing it.
ReplyDeleteI like how you're not afraid to tackle the hard patterns! These would scare me!:) I agree with Lynda- Gold all the way!! And how cute will this be in the fabric you chose! Have fun!:)
ReplyDeleteI love your baskets!! I have not ventured into curved piecing yet!! I just avoid it at all cost. LOL!!!! I definitely give you a gold medal!!!
ReplyDeleteLIke a prior commenter, I have not ventured into curve piecing either - totally scary! Looks like GOLD metal piecing to me!
ReplyDeleteVery pretty quilt that you picked out to make. Hope you'll show your progress on it. Can't wait to see it finished.
ReplyDeleteLove it!! It's definitely going to be a winner.
ReplyDeleteI'll stand up and cheer for you! I have never even tried curves...
ReplyDeleteI give them gold. I can only appliqué!
ReplyDeleteYou persevered through a crippling injury -I vote for Platinum!!! (those baskets are adorable!)
ReplyDeleteYeaaaaaaaaa! It is always fun to start on something new, and especially when it goes so quickly!
ReplyDeleteI've always admired that quilt, Paulette! Your basket look fantastic! Nice job.
ReplyDeleteOh how I want to start something new! But I cannot. I have committed to finishing at least 4 ufo's. I have 3 finished and only need the binding on the 4th. But I can't use the iron! Yesterday marked our 3rd day of 113 (yes, that's right) 113 degree weather for 3 days in a row. One of my blogger friends actually fried an egg on the sidewalk! I love your baskets and the very picture of them makes me want to do that quilt! What fun things you can load them with! Love your baskets! You are very talented!

I don't do the heat well either. You made excellent progress for a hot day. Love how the baskets turned out, a gold for sure.
ReplyDeleteYour baskets look fabulous! I was just recently sewing a bunch of curves (drunkard's path) for a retro flower quilt. It's amazing how well things go once you get in the groove!
ReplyDeleteOh my these baskets are just to sweet - LOVE IT - you go girl on starting something new - sometimes a girl just has to :). Stay cool my friend - I won't tell you that we have beautiful temps here today - last night we even put on a jacket - oops I did tell you - sorry about that but it was glorious :)

Awesome basket blocks! Such a clever idea. Can't wait to see what you do with the applique.
ReplyDeleteWay to conquer your fears and go for the Gold! Like many others, I have not attempted curves, and think you are incredibly brave. And awesome. A gold for Canada for sure!
ReplyDeleteYour baskets look great! They're going to make a great quilt! :0)
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on the heat issue. We're just not used to these hot temps. However, you made the most of it, like a true sewing athlete. I doubt I'll ever try curves, so I'll enjoy watching this gorgeous quilt take shape. Those curved baskets are worth double gold!
ReplyDeleteGold for the baskets and for revealing the secret of the curved seam! You made it sound less impossible.
ReplyDeleteWooHoo!!! There's no doubt in mind you'll win GOLD. I love, love, love your baskets - adorable.
ReplyDeleteFantastic!!.You win GOLD.I love applique and run with curves.
ReplyDeleteStop tempting me with baskets! I have just cleaned out my sewing room and had to start a file of basket patterns that I found LOL. I think your curved piecing efforts are definitely 10/10, well done.
ReplyDeleteThat will be a fun quilt to do, wish I could make my pillow look like that with the raised effect, but gave up on that idea and just doing an embroidery style.

ReplyDeleteThis looks fantastic!!
ReplyDeletePeople think we are crazy for moving from Australia to the UK but
I would be with you in front of the fan, I DO NOT like anything above 25 degrees. It got to 27 here recently & I was complaining LOL.
Looking forward to seeing the quilt come together.
Cheers

I think your baskets look great! I used to sew clothes years ago (with loads of curved seams) but I have yet to try anything with curved seams in quilting. Some day ;)
